Seattle Mayor Vetoes RV Camping Permit Bill, Council Has 30 Days to Decide on Override

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Seattle, King County, Washington — Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson on November 2 vetoed Council Bill 121283, the RV permit bill passed by the City Council that would have effectively banned people without shelter from camping in RVs in Seattle; she signed the other bills in the same legislative package. The bill had passed the council 6-3 and would have required RV campers to obtain a complicated permit; supporters said it would help manage street order, while opponents said it would worsen the situation of people already struggling without housing.

In her veto, the mayor raised concerns about the permit program's cost, its legal risks and the chance it would push more people into unsheltered homelessness. After the veto, the council has 30 days to decide whether to override it, which requires six votes.

RV camping in Seattle has long been a contested issue, involving public health, safety and street use on one side and the basic living space of vulnerable people amid a housing shortage on the other. How the mayor's office and the council proceed will decide the policy's final outcome, and community groups and residents are watching whether the council acts within the 30 days.
