Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina — Buncombe County announced on November 3 that it is inviting residents to a public workshop on November 5 to help shape the rebuilding of three river parks damaged by Tropical Storm Helene. The three parks — Alexander River Park, Ledges Whitewater Park and Walnut Island River Park — all lie along the French Broad River in northern Buncombe County.

The drop-in workshop runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on November 5 in the private event space of Salt Face Mule Brewing Co. at 450 Weaverville Road in Asheville, and residents may arrive at any time during the two hours. Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is hosting the session together with the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program.

The county said final concept plans for the rebuilding are expected in spring 2027, and the November workshop will help set their direction. In addition, the conservation group MountainTrue has received funding from the state agriculture department's Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program for planning, design and construction of bank stabilization and streambank restoration at Walnut Island and Ledges Whitewater parks.
