AP Calls Pennsylvania's 3rd District for Chris Rabb, Succeeding Retiring Rep. Dwight Evans

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — The Associated Press has called the race for Pennsylvania's 3rd Congressional District for Democrat Chris Rabb, who will succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Dwight Evans in Congress representing Philadelphia. At the time of the AP call, Rabb held a commanding lead with more than 90 percent of precincts reporting.
Rabb defeated independent candidate Dennis Mahoney in a race with no Republican nominee. A sitting Pennsylvania state representative, Rabb won a hard-fought Democratic primary, defeating State Senator Sharif Street and physician Ala Stanford to secure the nomination.
The 3rd District covers neighborhoods from South Philadelphia to West Philadelphia, Fairmount and the Northwest, and is a key seat in the city's political map. Evans's retirement made this year's contest an open-seat race, and Rabb's victory keeps the seat in Democratic hands. Philadelphia polls were open until 8 p.m., and election officials began pre-canvassing mail and absentee ballots at 7 a.m. on Election Day. An Associated Press call is a media determination based on reported returns, not an official certification; the final result follows the completed count and certification.
