San Diego County District 5 Supervisor Race Goes to Voters: Jones Faces Krahel

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, California — Voters in northern San Diego County, California went to the polls on November 3 for the District 5 seat on the Board of Supervisors, where San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones faces Democratic candidate Kyle Krahel for the open seat. No winner had been called as of election night.

The seat opened when Supervisor Jim Desmond reached his term limit and left to run for Congress in California's 48th District. Jones and Krahel finished as the top two candidates in the June primary and advanced to this runoff. District 5 is the county's largest supervisorial district, home to roughly 685,000 to 700,000 residents, and covers the cities of Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista, as well as Camp Pendleton, several tribal reservations and unincorporated communities. The Board of Supervisors provides key county services, including law enforcement and public health, to unincorporated areas.

Jones has been mayor of San Marcos since December 2018, after 11 years on the City Council; she campaigns on cutting waste and improving efficiency, and opposes a county charter amendment extending supervisor terms and a countywide sales tax measure. Krahel, a former chair of the county Democratic Party and now deputy chief of staff to Rep. Mike Levin, calls for a line-by-line audit of the county's roughly $9 billion budget and supports building affordable housing on county-owned land. The outcome will shape county policy in the North County for years to come.
