Charlotte Voters Decide $280 Million Transportation Bond for Roads, Sidewalks and Bike Lanes

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

On November 3, 2026, voters in Charlotte, in North Carolina's Mecklenburg County, decided a $280 million transportation bond proposal authorizing the city to borrow for building and improving streets, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, bridges and other transportation infrastructure, with passage requiring a simple majority. It was the largest item in Charlotte's $425 million bond package on this ballot, which also included housing and neighborhood improvement bonds.

Supporters argued that Charlotte's road conditions and mobility for residents without cars are among the city's most pressing problems and that the investment would improve travel across the city over the long term; critics focused on the $280 million scale and the resulting tax burden.

Mecklenburg County voters also chose a U.S. senator, state legislators, state judges and county officials that day, with polls open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and voters in line at closing still allowed to vote. Early voting statewide in North Carolina surpassed the 2022 midterms, led by Democratic and unaffiliated voters. The State Board of Elections held an emergency meeting that afternoon to extend hours at some polling places in seven counties, but Mecklenburg County was not on the extension list. Final bond results remain subject to county and state canvassing.
