12 Federal Election Monitors Arrive in Utah as Salt Lake County Clerk Says 'No Concerns'

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

On November 3, 2026, voting centers in Utah's Salt Lake County received 12 federal election monitors, part of the roughly 1,000 monitors the U.S. Department of Justice deployed nationwide this cycle; all 12 assigned to Utah were placed in Salt Lake County. County Clerk Lannie Chapman said she had 'no concerns' about the monitors' arrival and assured voters that every eligible voter would have the opportunity to cast a ballot.

Chapman also said she did not know in advance which of the county's 40 voting centers the monitors would visit, and that the monitors would appear only on Election Day, not during early voting. A Justice Department letter to Utah's chief elections officer, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, said the monitors' task is to observe and record possible violations of federal voting rights law; they must identify themselves to polling place supervisors, show credentials, wear business attire, and may not carry firearms or wear badges or uniforms identifying them with the department.

Groups including the League of Women Voters of Utah said the monitoring plan could make voters feel pressured and trained about 150 observers to watch the monitors' conduct on Election Day as well. Salt Lake County voting centers were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.
