Follow-up: Counting Update: First Arizona Results Posted, Hobbs and Mayes Lead Big in Early Returns

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Polls closed at 7 p.m. Mountain time on November 3 in Arizona, where voters decided the governor, attorney general, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction and other state offices, as well as nine U.S. House seats. The first results were posted after 8 p.m., drawn mainly from early ballots cast during October; Maricopa County election officials said the county had received more than one million ballots before Election Day.

According to The Arizona Republic's live coverage, the first unofficial returns showed Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, seeking re-election, with a commanding lead over Republican Representative Andy Biggs, and Democrat Kris Mayes well ahead of Republican Warren Petersen in the attorney general's race. Neither race had been called, and more results were to be released through the night and the following days. The Secretary of State's office reminded voters they can check the state ballot-tracking website to confirm their ballot has been counted. With Arizona's high share of early voting and Election Day ballots still to be tallied, close races may take days to settle, and official results must be certified by November 23.
