Follow-up: Federal Election Monitors Turned Away From New Haven Polling Places on Election Day Under Connecticut Law

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Federal election monitors in New Haven, Connecticut, were turned away from polling places on November 3 and were not allowed inside to observe voting. According to the New England Signal, citing the New England News Collaborative, the Trump administration sent four monitors to New Haven that day to check whether voting materials were provided in both English and Spanish; they were part of a Justice Department deployment of about 1,000 monitors to all 50 states. Both the Democratic and Republican registrars of voters in New Haven refused the monitors entry, citing Connecticut law barring federal observers from polling places and concerns about voter intimidation and public confidence; the Justice Department told the city that the monitors had no authority to arrest or detain anyone and had to remain outside the 75-foot zone around polling places set by state law.

At 6:30 that morning, Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Denver of the New Haven U.S. Attorney's Office appeared outside the Davis Street School polling place in Ward 26 on the Upper West Side, the first sighting of the operation. Polls in Connecticut closed at 8 p.m., and more than 500,000 voters had already cast absentee or early ballots before Election Day.
