Counting Update: Talarico Leads Paxton With 3,509,908 Votes in Texas Senate Race

On the night of November 3, as counting advanced in Texas's 2026 midterm elections, Democratic state Representative James Talarico held a temporary lead in the U.S. Senate race. Associated Press figures show 5,748 of 9,900 precincts reporting, about 58.06%, with Talarico at 3,509,908 votes and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton at 2,447,411. The AP lists the race as too early to call. In the earliest returns of the night, when only a few counties had reported early-voting figures, Paxton briefly led; as more counties reported, Talarico moved ahead and widened his lead.
Polls closed at 7 p.m. Central in most of Texas, with El Paso and Hudspeth counties, on Mountain Time, closing an hour later. The Secretary of State's office is releasing unofficial statewide results through its election-night reporting system; official results follow county canvassing and certification. The Senate race is one of the most closely watched contests in the country this year. The winner will succeed retiring U.S. Senator John Cornyn; if Talarico wins, he would be the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988. The same day, Texas voters also chose a governor, lieutenant governor, state supreme court justices, all U.S. House seats and state legislative seats. More than 7.7 million Texans voted early, about 40.5% of registered voters.
