AP Declares Balint Reelected in Vermont, Winning a Third Term in the U.S. House

On the night of November 3, Vermont Democratic U.S. Representative Becca Balint won reelection, earning a third term in the U.S. House. The Associated Press confirmed the result at 7:41 p.m., with Balint defeating Republican challenger Gerald Malloy. Vermont's polls closed at 7 p.m.; with about 28% of ballots counted, Balint led Malloy by more than 30 percentage points, consistent with her performance against Republican opponents in her previous two races. Speaking that night at the Vermont Democratic Party's election-night gathering in Burlington, Balint thanked supporters and said she would continue holding the powerful to account, push for economic fairness and restore young people's faith in democracy. Affordability was a central issue for both sides during the campaign: in a Vermont public television debate, Balint blamed gasoline price increases on the war with Iran and criticized the Trump administration's tariffs for hurting small businesses; Malloy, an Army veteran and defense contractor, said that if elected he would work to attract businesses to Vermont and create more career opportunities, while favoring a less aggressive approach on immigration enforcement. Vermont has a single U.S. House seat and has not elected a Republican to it since 1988. Three independent candidates also ran, each receiving about 1% in unofficial results. The same day, Vermont voters also chose a governor, lieutenant governor, all state legislative seats and two state constitutional amendments; the governor's race was still being counted.
