Follow-up: San Francisco Chinatown's Red's Place May Stay Open Into December as $500K in Required Upgrades Force Closure

Red's Place, the bar at Jackson Street and Grant Avenue in the Chinatown of San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, is closing, and its final day may be pushed into December. According to SFGATE and NBC Bay Area, owner Jerry Chan says upgrades required by his insurer and landlord would cost about $500,000 in total, more than the bar can bear.

Chan said his commercial insurer wrote in early October requiring mandatory upgrades covering plumbing, electrical, structural and basement work, while the landlord also requires ADA compliance, including a wider entrance and an accessible restroom. He first planned to close at the end of October but now hopes to stay open into December so staff can keep working; the final date will be posted on the bar's social media.

Red's bills itself as Chinatown's oldest bar, dating to the early 1960s, though a 1938 advertisement also mentioned the spot serving cocktails, Chinese barbecue pork and spare ribs. Chan's parents, Herman and Lisa Chan, bought the bar in 1990 and he took over in 2010; the bar is also a gathering point for Lunar New Year firecracker celebrations. District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter said he was gutted by the news and had offered help, but Chan said the cost was simply not doable.
