Polls Open in Michigan as Nation Watches Senate and Governor Races

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

On November 3, voters in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, and across the state headed to the polls, which opened at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Voters will elect a new governor, decide a nationally watched U.S. Senate race, determine control of both chambers of the state Legislature and vote on two statewide ballot proposals. According to the Michigan Department of State, more than 2.4 million Michiganders — about 33% of the state's 7.4 million registered voters — had already voted by absentee ballot or at early voting sites by 7 a.m. on Election Day.

In the Senate race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County and Detroit health director, faces Republican Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative. In the governor's race, with incumbent Gretchen Whitmer term-limited, voters choose between Democrat Jocelyn Benson, the secretary of state, and Republican John James, a sitting U.S. representative; the RealClearPolling average on November 1 gave Benson a lead of about 8.8 points.

Metro Detroit voters are also deciding local issues including a zoo millage renewal and museum millages, which will affect public services and cultural funding for years. The Detroit Free Press fanned out across metro Detroit polling places, where voters cited gas prices, living costs and retirement security among their top concerns.
