Mississippi Election Day: Hinds County's Voter-Info Link Is Dead and the Election Commission Phone Has Been Down for Days

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Mississippi voters went to the polls on November 3 to decide U.S. Senate and House seats and local contests, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; anyone still in line at 7 p.m. had the legal right to vote. In the Senate race, Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith faced Democrat Scott Colom and independent Ty Pinkins. The Secretary of State reminded voters that mail absentee ballots had to be postmarked by November 3 and received by circuit clerks by November 10, and that voters who cast affidavit ballots for lack of photo ID had to present acceptable ID to the circuit clerk by November 10. The National Weather Service forecast a cloudy, windy Election Day statewide, with rain, thunderstorms and even tornadoes possible. In Hinds County, election-day services hit problems: Circuit Clerk Zack Wallace texted voters at 5:03 p.m. on November 2 with polling hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but the voter-information link in the text did not work; the county website had been inaccessible since October 20 and the election commission's phone had been disconnected since October 21. Voters could find polling places on the Secretary of State's YallVote.ms site.
