Rhode Island Sets an Early-Voting Record of Nearly 140,000 Ballots as Three Candidates Vie for Governor

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Rhode Island polls were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on November 3, except in New Shoreham, where hours were 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; mail ballots had to reach the Board of Elections by 8 p.m. The marquee race was for governor, a three-way contest among Democrat Helena Foulkes, Republican Aaron Guckian and independent Ken Block; Foulkes voted early in the morning at the Salvation Army polling place in Providence. Gov. Dan McKee lost the Democratic primary to Foulkes, so Rhode Island will have a new governor in January regardless of the outcome. In the lieutenant governor's race, Democratic incumbent Sabina Matos faced Republican John Loughlin. A University of New Hampshire poll released November 1 showed Foulkes at 55%, ahead of Block at 34% and Guckian at 8%, and Matos at 56% to Loughlin's 41%. In Providence, Democratic socialist David Morales faced Republican David Talan for mayor. Voters also decided several budget referendum questions. Enthusiasm was high: by the close of November 2, 139,976 people had voted by mail or in-person early, the highest pre-Election Day total in state history; the record for a non-presidential year is 393,882 votes in 2006, within reach this year. Polling-place and early-voting results were scheduled from 8:20 p.m., with mail-ballot results after 9 p.m.
