South Dakota Election Day: Governor and Senate Races Plus Four Statewide Measures

November 3 was midterm Election Day in South Dakota, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and voters in line at 7 p.m. still able to vote. In the governor's race, Republican state House Speaker Jon Hansen, with Gov. Larry Rhoden as his running mate, faced Democratic state Rep. Robert 'Bob' Ahlers; the winner would also shape the choice of the next House speaker. In the Senate race, Republican Sen. Mike Rounds, seeking a third term, faced Democratic teacher Brian Bengs, having already won his primary. The ballot carried four statewide measures: a Medicaid-expansion measure, a citizenship measure, a measure on unclaimed property in a government trust fund, and a measure raising the threshold for constitutional amendments to 60%. The secretary of state's race was competitive, with Republican Monae Johnson, Democrat Terrence Davis and Libertarian Amber Marco; for attorney general, Republican incumbent Marty Jackley faced Democrat Michael Gronli. All 70 state representatives and all 35 state senators were up for election. The Secretary of State's office oversees ballot printing and distribution; voters had to show photo ID such as a South Dakota driver's license, military ID, passport or student ID, and results would be posted on the office's website.
