[Video] Follow-Up: Tail of Florida Learjet Found in Three Pieces 1.3 to 3.8 Miles From Crash Site

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on the afternoon of Nov. 3 held a news conference at the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center in Florida and released its latest findings on the Greenacres Learjet 60 crash: investigators on Monday found the majority of the jet's tail, in three pieces, between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the crash site.

NTSB board member Tom Chapman announced the finding at the news conference. The Learjet 60 crashed on Nov. 1 near the intersection of Military Trail and Cresthaven Boulevard in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida, while flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, killing all nine people on board. Debris from the crash was initially estimated to have spread within about half a mile of the crash site; the tail's recovery miles away further supports the NTSB's finding, announced a day earlier, that the aircraft had begun breaking up before it hit the ground.

Chapman said investigators are laying out the collected pieces of the aircraft to reconstruct it and determine what occurred. He urged residents who find anything that may be part of the aircraft to leave it alone and contact the NTSB or local authorities.

The crash forced about 600 residents near the site to evacuate, and between 40 and 50 are staying at the Greenacres Community Center. Palm Beach County spokesperson John Jamason said the county is seeking money from the state to help the displaced residents with housing and transportation. Military Trail remains closed in both directions between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane, and there was no word on Tuesday on when the road will reopen or when evacuated residents can return home.

NTSB investigators are expected to remain in Palm Beach County for several days. The cause of the crash has not been determined. (Source: National Transportation Safety Board)
