Access Cut at Utah's Red Cliffs Conservation Area: Rain-Carved Ruts Close Babylon Road, BLM Asks Visitors to Stay Away

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Bureau of Land Management's St. George Field Office advised the public on November 3 that access to the Virgin River and Sand Cove Trailhead in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area has been disrupted after recent rain events damaged Babylon Road near Leeds, Utah.

According to the BLM, a deep rut runs through the center of the access road and the damaged stretch is currently impassable for all vehicles. For public safety, the agency is asking visitors to avoid the area until repairs are complete. Those who choose to recreate in the area do so knowing that emergency response may be significantly delayed, and visitors are entering at their own risk.

The BLM is working with Washington County and the local developer to assess the damage and determine an accelerated timeline for repairs, and thanked the public for its patience while crews work to safely reopen the area.

The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in southwestern Utah is known for its red-rock walls, desert washes and trails along the Virgin River. For more information, the public can contact the BLM St. George Field Office at (435) 688-3200. (Source: Bureau of Land Management)
