Delaware Senate Election: AP Projects Chris Coons Wins Reelection

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Associated Press projected on the evening of November 3 that Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Coons has won Delaware's U.S. Senate election, defeating Republican candidate Michael Katz to win reelection. The AP made the call shortly after polls closed.

An AP results snapshot showed 435 of Delaware's 533 precincts reporting, or 81.61%, with an estimated 81.73% of the total vote counted. Coons had 202,866 votes to Katz's 111,643, a margin of about 91,000 votes. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.

Coons entered the Senate in a 2010 special election, succeeding Joe Biden, who had become vice president, and has served since, sitting on the Appropriations, Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees. The win gives him a third full term. Katz is a pediatric anesthesiologist who served in the Delaware state senate from 2009 to 2013.

The Senate race was held statewide on the same day as the U.S. House election, with Dover as the state capital.
