Ohio Governor Election: AP Projects Amy Acton Wins, Becoming the State's First Elected Woman Governor

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Associated Press projected on the evening of November 3 that Democrat Amy Acton has won the Ohio governor's race, defeating Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, the entrepreneur backed by President Donald Trump. Ohio is in the American Midwest; Acton will become the first woman elected governor of Ohio, and it is the first time a Democrat has won the state's governorship since 2006.

The AP results page showed about 87% of precincts reporting, with Acton at 2,101,698 votes and Ramaswamy at 1,888,464. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.

Acton, a physician and public health official, served as director of the Ohio Department of Health under Governor Mike DeWine and became a statewide figure during the early COVID-19 pandemic. She will succeed the term-limited DeWine. Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur who ran in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries. More than 1.7 million Ohioans voted early in this election, a state midterm record.
