Follow-up: AP Calls Texas Senate Race for Talarico, a First Democratic Win Since 1988

The Associated Press called the Texas U.S. Senate race on the evening of November 3 for Democrat James Talarico, who defeated Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton, the candidate backed by President Donald Trump. Texas, in the southern United States, is the nation's second most populous state; it is the first time a Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat from Texas since 1988, and the first Democratic statewide win in Texas since 1994.
The AP results page showed 6,616 of the state's 9,900 precincts reporting, about 66.83%, with Talarico at 4,125,080 votes and Paxton at 2,731,396. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials. GSM's earlier count update that evening had Talarico leading with about 3.51 million votes, and the call marks the final stage of that count.
Talarico, 37, a state representative from Austin and a former teacher, takes the seat left open by retiring Republican Senator John Cornyn, who lost the Republican primary runoff to Paxton. More than $573 million was spent on advertising in the race, making it the most expensive nonpresidential contest in U.S. history.
