Follow-up: Trump Congratulates Democrats in Election-Night CBS Call: Looks Forward to Working With Them for the Good of the Country
Washington — President Donald Trump congratulated the Democrats on their midterm election victories in a phone call with CBS News on election night, November 3, saying he looks forward to working with them for the good of the country.
"My message is, congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country," Trump said. He repeated that he was not on the ballot and there was nothing that could be done about that, adding, "If I was, we would have won."
In a separate call with Fox News the same night, Trump again said the Democrats "did a good job" and "fought hard," acknowledged that the Republican losses were "part of it Iran," and also blamed high fuel costs. He said he is not planning any major cabinet shakeup and that the results had nothing to do with his cabinet.
Earlier that evening, Trump had told The New York Times he was "absolutely willing" to accept the midterm results and would work with Democrats. Returns showed Democrats winning control of the Senate, with major outlets projecting they would also retake the House.
