Trump Says He Is Absolutely Willing to Accept Midterm Results: Will Work With Democrats

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · White House · GSM News

Washington — President Donald Trump said in an interview with The New York Times on election night, November 3, that he was "absolutely willing" to accept the results of the midterm elections and that he would work with the Democrats. The interview took place shortly before 10:30 p.m. ET, as returns showed Republicans losing races across the country and Democrats projected to retake control of the House of Representatives.

"We'll work with the Democrats, and we'll, you know, look forward to working with them. We'll probably work something out," Trump said. He attributed the Republican losses to his not being on the ballot, saying the party would have won in a landslide had he been; he also wrote on social media: "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!"

Trump said he did not regret endorsing Republican candidates who ultimately lost, and that he was watching the returns as he spoke. On October 27 he had said he would accept the results only if the elections were "honest"; this time he said he was willing to accept the results without attaching that condition.
