DC Chinatown Crime Rate Still 49 Percent Above District Average as Residents Press for Action

Crime remains a stubborn problem in the Chinatown of Washington, D.C. According to a November 3 report by The Wash, American University's news laboratory, while crime across the District has trended down in recent years, Chinatown has not seen the same improvement: data from real estate platform DoorProfit put Chinatown's crime rate 49 percent above the District average and 54 percent above the national average.
Residents and business owners told the outlet their biggest concern is crime involving groups of young people. Metropolitan Police Department data obtained by WJLA showed frequent robberies, harassment, stabbings and fights involving large groups of teenagers around Seventh Street NW in Chinatown.
The report said the Chinatown community is calling on soon-to-be-elected officials to act. Chinatown, marked by the Friendship Archway, is a historic Chinese community in downtown Washington with many Chinese restaurants and businesses, and public safety there directly affects livelihoods and daily life.
