CPSC Warns Consumers to Stop Using Cranach Tip Restraint Kits: 115 Breakage Reports, Six Tip-Overs

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Society · GSM News

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers in Washington to immediately stop using defective plastic tip restraint kits, also called furniture straps, manufactured by Cranach Hardware. The kits are meant to anchor furniture to a wall to prevent tip-overs, but the plastic can break or degrade over time, and furniture could tip over if a child interacts with furniture secured by the product.

CPSC testing found that the defective tip restraints failed to meet the requirements of ASTM F3096-23, the industry standard for tip restraints. The commission called it a hidden defect, because consumers who install the product may have a false sense of security that their furniture is safe from a tip-over incident. CPSC is aware of at least 115 incidents in which consumers reported that the kits broke, including six reported tip-over incidents, and says a young child could be severely injured by furniture secured with the defective restraints.

Each kit contains two plastic brackets, one for connection to the furniture and one for connection to the wall, a plastic cable zip tie, two pairs of screws of different lengths, and two drywall anchors. The kits have been sold on Amazon.com for between $6 and $30, depending on the number of units in the package, and were manufactured in China. CPSC said the manufacturer, Cranach Hardware, has not responded to a request for an acceptable recall.

CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop using the kits, remove them from furniture and dispose of them, and to secure furniture with tip restraints that comply with ASTM F3096-23. The commission's Anchor It! website offers free educational materials on anchoring furniture, and incidents involving injury or product defects can be reported to CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.
