Former Prince Andrew Served a High Court Witness Summons Over a £750,000 Payment, a First for a Royal in 156 Years

LONDON — Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew, has been served a witness summons to give evidence in a civil fraud trial at the High Court in London, British media reported on November 4, according to the Associated Press. Lawyers for the claimant said they believed it would be the first time since 1870 that a member of the royal family had been subject to a witness summons, a gap of 156 years.

The claimant, Turkish national Nebahat Evyap Isbilen, alleges that her former financial adviser Selman Turk misappropriated tens of millions of pounds of her money. She says Turk misled her about a £750,000 payment that was arranged for Andrew in 2019. Andrew repaid the money in 2021; he is not a defendant in the case and is not accused of fraud.

In an October 23 judgment, High Court judge Mr Justice Adam Johnson gave Turk permission to call Andrew to give evidence, saying Andrew would likely have declined to provide a witness statement voluntarily. Andrew is expected to give evidence in mid-December, in person or by video link, though he may still apply to have the summons set aside, so his appearance is not guaranteed. The trial is due to begin in the week of November 16 and to last about 11 weeks.

Andrew is a younger brother of King Charles III. In 2025, Charles stripped him of his prince title amid the controversy over his association with the late American financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
