Bellevue Tract Dad Calls His Tirade 'Irrational' but Says Candy-Bag Evangelism Felt Like 'Grooming'

There is a new development in the Halloween gospel-tract confrontation in Bellevue, Washington. The father who unleashed a profanity-laced tirade outside a neighbor's home has given a written statement to Britain's Daily Mail, admitting his outburst that night was "irrational" and saying he felt "a bit of a jackass" — while maintaining that he objects to using Halloween to evangelize to children.
The incident happened on Halloween night: after finding a yellow, pumpkin-themed gospel tract in his son's trick-or-treat bag, the father drove back to the family's home and berated them. The confrontation was filmed and posted online by journalist Jonathan Choe, where it has been viewed more than 129,000 times. The tract read "Jesus loves you so much" and covered God's love and human sin, included a salvation prayer, and carried John 3:16 on the back.
In his statement, he wrote: "I do not need people proselytizing on a holiday that is supposed to be about kids getting candy." "My kids brought it to me and they were upset that they got it. It felt very wrong on so many levels," he added. He claimed the family was "enticing children with bags of candy and then telling them Jesus is the truth. It felt very 'grooming' to me."
No reporting has suggested any wrongdoing by the family; the father's "grooming" remark is his personal characterization of putting religious literature in candy bags. The father has not been publicly identified, and the family has not publicly responded to his statement.
