Woman Killed, Gunman Fatally Shot by Security Guard at Citibank Campus Near Tampa, Florida; Four Others Injured
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Florida said on November 4 that a shooting at the Citibank Center campus in Brandon left one woman dead and the gunman fatally wounded by an armed security guard, with four other people injured and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Sheriff Chad Chronister said preliminary information indicated a targeted incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Chief Deputy Frank Losat told a news conference that multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the campus plaza came in at 12:11 p.m., and the first sheriff's unit arrived at 12:12 p.m. The suspect drove a small four-door sedan over several medians and a grassy area, crashed through a secured fence into an outdoor lunch area, got out and fatally shot a woman.
At about 12:15 p.m., an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman inside the campus cafeteria. The two exchanged gunfire; the suspect was shot and later died at Tampa General Hospital. About 3,200 Citibank employees were on the property at the time, and 367 deputies responded, including SWAT teams that cleared the buildings floor by floor and directed employees to a reunification site.
Investigators have not determined how the four other injured people were hurt, whether by gunfire, the vehicle or otherwise. The sheriff's office has not released the identities of the woman killed or the gunman, and whether the two knew each other and a motive remain under investigation. The sheriff's office asked anyone with relevant video to send it to the office's published email address.
The Citibank Center, in the Sabal Park office area about nine miles east of downtown Tampa, comprises four three-story office buildings and is one of Citi's main campuses in the Tampa region.
