Austin Voters Reject Proposition I, Defeating Recurring Outside-Audit Charter Amendment

Voters in Austin, in Travis County, Texas, on November 3 rejected Proposition I, a charter amendment that would have mandated recurring outside audits of city finances, by about 12 percentage points. The result, reported on November 4, was one of the more closely watched local questions on Austin's ballot. Supporters argued that periodic outside audits would improve fiscal transparency.
Opponents argued that the city already has audit mechanisms and that mandatory outside audits would add administrative cost without a corresponding improvement in management. The vote showed most voters considered the existing system sufficient, and the defeat means Austin's fiscal oversight structure will not change in the near term.
Several Austin City Council district races were on the same ballot; Districts 1, 3 and 5 are headed to runoffs expected on December 12. The city said it will continue operating under its existing audit system and publish financial reports as required.
