Denver Voters Pass Ordinance 311 With 66.55% in Favor, Banning Sale of Force-Fed Foie Gras

Voters in Denver, Colorado, on November 3 approved Initiated Ordinance 311, ending the sale of force-fed foie gras in the city. According to unofficial results released by the Denver Elections Division on November 4, the measure received 66.55% of the vote, with 136,559 votes in favor. The measure takes effect on July 1, 2027.
The measure was a project of the animal-protection organization Pro-Animal Future; 84 volunteers collected more than 16,000 signatures to place it on the ballot. Washington, D.C., voters approved a similar measure the same day, Initiative 86, with 73% support. Pro-Animal Future also led the Portland campaign that passed a similar ordinance in June 2026.
Supporters say force-feeding ducks and geese is cruel and that the ban reflects voters' values on the humane treatment of animals. California, New York City, Pittsburgh and Portland already have similar bans in place. Once the ordinance takes effect, Denver restaurants may no longer sell force-fed foie gras products.
