Indianapolis Airport Hosts Third Annual Naturalization Ceremony as 82 New Citizens Take the Oath

The Indianapolis International Airport hosted its third annual naturalization ceremony on November 4, welcoming 82 people from 33 countries as new U.S. citizens in the airport's Civic Plaza. The ceremony began at about 10 a.m., as the new citizens raised their right hands and took the Oath of Citizenship before family and friends, Indianapolis Airport Authority leadership, city, state and federal officials and community organization representatives, before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez addressed the ceremony. Peter Ryan, the oldest of the new citizens, was presented with an American flag from The International Center, a traditional part of the ceremony. The Indianapolis airport held its first annual naturalization ceremony in November 2024, making this the third; the airport hopes the event lets new citizens feel welcome at the gateway where many first arrived in the United States.
The naturalization ceremony is the final step to U.S. citizenship: applicants must pass background checks and English and civics tests and swear allegiance before a judge or authorized official. The airport setting is symbolic, as it is where many new citizens first arrived to begin their new lives. The Airport Authority says it will keep working with federal agencies to make the ceremony an annual community tradition.
