A Montana Highway Patrol investigation disclosed on November 4 shows that at about 7:31 a.m. on October 27, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. Highway 93 near Cochise Drive. Charlize Stafford, 20, was driving a white Honda Accord southbound at about 80 mph when she lost control while attempting to pass, setting off a chain of collisions: the Accord came to rest on its side, a Honda CR-V rolled onto its roof, and a Toyota 4Runner struck the concrete median barrier, sustaining extensive front-end damage, with three sections of the barrier displaced more than a foot into the northbound lanes.

Troopers reported Stafford showed 9 of 18 impairment clues in standardized field sobriety tests, and a preliminary breath test registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.159. Two other drivers were taken to St. Patrick Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Stafford is charged with two counts of felony criminal endangerment and DUI, second offense, with bond set at $5,000; she had previously been convicted of DUI on March 16, 2026. Two blood samples were collected for further toxicology testing.
