Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 4, the Nebraska Supreme Court convened in the auditorium of Blair High School, giving students a firsthand look at the judicial process. The event was held at the invitation of Principal Mark Gutschow, with support from the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, to promote civics education and public engagement.

The program began at 10 a.m. with a welcome from Principal Gutschow, followed by District Court Judge Zachary Blackman, who explained the appellate process and the background of the cases. The two cases argued were Hall County School District 40-0082 v. Sackschewsky, out of Hall County, and State v. Smith, out of Lancaster County. After the arguments, students took part in a question-and-answer session with the justices. The court said holding sessions at schools is a long-running civics education effort to help young people understand how courts work.
