Princeton and Jersey Shore Chinese Schools Hold First Chinese Character Carnival in New Jersey: 11 Students Win Awards

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

Two Taiwan Centers for Mandarin Learning (TCML) in New Jersey recently joined forces to host the first "Chinese Character Carnival – TCML Cup Character Challenge," giving adult Mandarin learners a platform to learn through competition. The event was co-hosted by the TCML programs at Princeton Chinese Language School and Jersey Shore Chinese School, drawing students from eight classes across the two schools.

Based on Books 1 through 4 of Let's Learn Mandarin, participants were divided into three groups by proficiency and competed in "Lightning Character Recognition" and "Vocabulary in Context Challenge," with 11 outstanding participants ultimately winning prizes and cash awards. Justine Hsieh, director of the Princeton TCML, and Cindy Chiang, director of the Jersey Shore TCML, said the first interschool character competition also laid the groundwork for a replicable model; the organizers will gather teacher and student feedback, refine the format, and plan to invite more TCML programs next year to make the carnival an annual multi-school event.
