Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 4, the U.S. flag in downtown Newberg, Oregon, flew at half-staff to honor Tyler Sturdevant, a pilot killed in the October 29 helicopter crash near McMinnville. The Statesman Journal reported that the Newberg City Council voted unanimously on November 2 to lower the flag. Sturdevant, 38, was a Navy veteran, husband and father, and a pilot of 20 years who owned and operated Chehalem Aviation Services in Newberg and had flown firefighting missions.

On November 4, Sturdevant's family, coworkers and members of agencies he had worked with escorted his remains through Newberg. The procession began at the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office, arrived in Newberg at about 11 a.m., traveled along Highway 99W and reached Macy & Son Funeral Home in McMinnville at noon. City Councilor Robyn Wheatley wrote on social media that Sturdevant was a father, husband, accomplished pilot, Navy veteran and man of faith. The October 29 crash killed three people, and its cause remains under investigation. With the half-staff flag and the procession, Newberg said a final goodbye to a pilot who had served the community for years.
