Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

The City of Sturgis, South Dakota, has launched an update of its comprehensive plan, inviting residents to help shape the community's future growth and development. It is the city's first full review of the long-range guide since its last complete comprehensive plan in 2010, 16 years ago. The Planning Commission heard the project kickoff presentation at its November 3 meeting.

According to the city, the updated plan will take a fresh look at community needs and set long-range guidance for land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure and economic development. The Black Hills Council of Local Governments has been contracted to assist city staff and the Planning Commission, and introduced the proposed planning process, expected timeline, public participation opportunities and the roles of those involved at the November 3 meeting. The process has six phases and is expected to run through 2027 into early 2028.

The city says community involvement will be an important part of developing a plan that truly reflects residents' needs and long-term vision, and participation opportunities will be announced as the process moves forward. The November 3 kickoff meeting was for introduction and preliminary feedback, with no formal action taken. Sturgis is known for its annual summer motorcycle rally, and the plan update will also set a longer-term framework for the resident community of the Black Hills town.
