Opening Statements Begin November 4 in Palisades Arson Retrial in Los Angeles, California

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · City · GSM News

On November 4, 2026, attorneys were set to give opening statements in downtown Los Angeles federal court in the second trial over the Palisades Fire arson case. The defendant, Jonathan Rinderknecht, was originally charged with three federal arson counts; prosecutors later filed a superseding indictment with two charges, destruction of property by means of fire and arson affecting property used in interstate commerce. Rinderknecht, 30, has pleaded not guilty and denies the charges. Prosecutors say that around midnight on December 31, 2024, he used a grill lighter to ignite hillside vegetation near the Summit neighborhood of Pacific Palisades; the fire smoldered underground for a week before Santa Ana winds rekindled it on January 7, 2025, into the Palisades Fire.

The case was tried once earlier this year, but the jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of acquittal, a mistrial was declared, and prosecutors vowed to retry it. Prospective jurors were questioned on Monday and Tuesday, a final panel was chosen late Tuesday, and opening statements followed on November 4. U.S. District Judge Anne Hwang has ruled there be no reference to the first trial during the retrial.

The Palisades Fire was the most destructive fire in Los Angeles history, killing 12 people, burning 23,448 acres, destroying about 6,500 structures across Pacific Palisades and Malibu, and causing billions of dollars in damage. Prosecutors told the first jury the defendant was driven by anger, loneliness and revenge against the wealthy; the defense denies the charges. The retrial will decide criminal responsibility for the disaster and is being closely watched by fire survivors and the city.
