Los Angeles Mayor's Race Flips as Counting Continues: Raman Leads Mayor Bass 51.1% to 48.9%, Race Still Uncalled

The race for mayor of Los Angeles, California, has flipped as ballots continue to be counted. According to the Associated Press count, City Councilmember Nithya Raman has overtaken Mayor Karen Bass: with about 63% of the estimated vote counted, Raman has 377,458 votes, or 51.1%, to Bass's 360,864 votes, or 48.9% — a margin of 16,594 votes. The race has not been called, and a winner may not be known for several days.
Bass initially led by about two percentage points in the first results released on election night, but Raman steadily gained as Los Angeles County election officials released additional batches of ballots, moving ahead in the early hours of November 4. The pattern echoed the June primary, when Raman also overcame an early deficit as later ballots were counted. Raman said she would wait for the remaining ballots to be counted before declaring victory.
A final pre-election poll covered by GSM had the two Democrats tied at 40% each. Bass is Los Angeles's first African American woman mayor; Raman, who represents the Fourth Council District, comes from the Democratic Party's progressive wing. The winner will lead the nation's second-largest city into the 2028 Summer Olympics while confronting homelessness, housing affordability and public safety.
Under California rules, mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can be counted if they arrive within seven days, and county counting continues after Election Day, so the final result in the mayor's race could take days or longer to settle.
