LA Mayor's Race: Raman Says Legal Experts Assure She Could Vote on Hollywood Measures as Mayor; Bass Campaign Pushes Back

Friday, October 23, 2026 · City · GSM News

In Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, where voters cast ballots in the mayor's race on November 3, the campaign of City Councilmember Nithya Raman told POLITICO California Playbook that Raman has consulted several outside legal experts who assured her she would be fully able to vote on Hollywood measures if elected mayor.

The dispute traces to March, when Raman recused herself from four of seven City Council votes on Councilmember Adrin Nazarian's 'Keep Hollywood Home' package, acting on the city attorney's advice and out of an abundance of caution because her husband, Vali Chandrasekaran, is a television writer and producer whose credits include '30 Rock' and 'Modern Family.' The measures she skipped included a free permit for small shoots and faster soundstage development; all seven passed unanimously among members present.

Raman campaign spokesperson Liz Garcia said the outside experts assured Raman she could act fully, and that Raman has repeatedly said nothing would stop her from being the industry's fiercest advocate. Alex Stack, a spokesperson for Mayor Karen Bass's campaign, responded that with thousands of jobs and productions on the line, Angelenos do not want to take a risk on someone who cannot vote on measures to help Hollywood, and noted that Raman authored no industry measure in six years. Raman's Hollywood plan calls for faster, more predictable film permits and reduced fees, which she says would be a day-one priority of her mayor's office.
