The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 4, that one of the two deputies shot and critically wounded in the Spangle domestic violence shooting died of his injuries on Tuesday evening, November 3. The second deputy remains on life support with injuries that are not survivable. The sheriff's office said the second deputy is an organ donor and arrangements are being made: "He will continue to serve others with the gift of life." The deputy who died is survived by his wife and two children.

"Although we know our Deputies knew the risks, they bravely moved toward danger to protect others they did not know," the sheriff's office said in the statement. "They did this with honor and with an unwavering sense of duty to their oath to serve and protect the citizens of Spokane County; they heroically placed themselves in mortal danger." Neither deputy has been identified, and their families have asked for privacy. Sheriff John Nowels said at an earlier news conference that both are younger deputies - one a SWAT team member, the other a K-9 deputy who recently served on SWAT - and that both have young children.

The shooting began at about 2:25 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, at a home in the 18700 block of South Smythe Road near Spangle, in Spokane County, Washington, after a woman ran to a neighbor's house and said her brother had shot her; her injuries were not life-threatening, and the suspect had an active felony warrant. At about 3:19 p.m., as SWAT team members and deputies advanced toward a door of the home, they were met with gunfire; two deputies were critically wounded and three deputies returned fire. The suspect and another person were found dead inside the home, and another victim was found dead in the yard. One deputy was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center by patrol car and the other by Life Flight helicopter. The deputy's death brings the toll from the shooting to four.

The Spokane Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, the Washington State Patrol is reviewing the deputies' use of force, and the three deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave. The suspect and the other victims have not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
