Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · World · GSM News

Thousands of people rallied in Tehran on Wednesday, November 4, to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Iran, according to Associated Press photo reporting from the Iranian capital. At a state-organised rally at Enghelab Square in central Tehran, the crowd burned a giant banner depicting US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US envoy Steve Witkoff.

Marchers in central Tehran burned US and Israeli flags and paraded effigies through the streets. Iranian officials at the rally framed both the US midterm election results and the battlefield situation as defeats for the United States and Israel.

On November 4, 1979, Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. The date is marked in Iran with annual rallies and marches.
