Poland's Tusk: Democracy Won in America; Urges Trump Not to Govern by Veto
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the US midterm elections at a joint press conference in Warsaw on Wednesday, November 4, alongside Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Democrats took control of both houses of Congress from the Republicans in the elections. "Today, democracy won in America," Tusk said, according to Polish media reports. "I love democracy; it is a beautiful thing." He noted that President Donald Trump himself had said the Democrats did a good job after the election, adding, "I really could not agree more with him this time," and said he hoped the result would help stabilise the situation in the region.
Tusk also drew on Poland's experience to advise Trump against relying on the presidential veto. Trump had posted a photo of his red cap bearing the word "VETO" after the election; Tusk said a veto cannot help in conducting good policy.
Babiš, appearing alongside Tusk, said the results would change the political situation in Washington but that Trump would retain enormous powers. He urged Trump to focus on ending the war in Ukraine and resolving the conflict around Hormuz, saying Europe bears much of the cost of both conflicts.
