Stabbing Near Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman Kills Jordanian Security Officer and Wounds Another; Attacker Arrested

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · World · GSM News

Amman — Jordan's Public Security Directorate confirmed on November 5 that at about 12:20 p.m. local time, a man armed with a sharp object attacked diplomatic security personnel on duty outside a guard post on Medina al-Munawwara Street in the Sweifieh district of the capital Amman, near the Sri Lankan embassy. Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf al-Salaita was stabbed, including in the neck, and died of his wounds in hospital; a second security officer was wounded. A patrol that reached the scene subdued and arrested the attacker, who, according to Jordanian media, had tried to seize the fallen officer's weapon.

Public Security Directorate spokesperson Colonel Amer al-Sartawi said a preliminary investigation indicated the attacker had planned the assault in advance against public security personnel, and authorities described it as a cowardly terrorist act. Al Jazeera, citing security sources, said the attacker was born in 1994. Sri Lanka's ambassador to Jordan, Wishwanath Aponsu, and embassy officials are coordinating closely with Jordanian authorities and monitoring the security situation.

Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein visited the wounded officer in hospital the same day. Jordanian local media reported that the attacker's judicial record shows an affiliation with the Islamic State group, a claim that remains subject to the official investigation.

It was Jordan's second serious attack in less than two weeks: gunmen previously opened fire during a funeral at a church in Karak Governorate, killing nine people and injuring dozens. Jordanian authorities said a comprehensive investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances and motive of the attack.
