Illinois Governor Appoints Kirkwood to Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced on November 4 that he has appointed Beth McElroy Kirkwood to fill the vacant seat on the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago. The district handles wastewater treatment and water resources protection for the greater Chicago area, centered on Cook County. The appointment was announced from Springfield, the state capital in Sangamon County.
Kirkwood will fill the vacancy left by Mariyana Spyropolous, who was elected Clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court in November. Kirkwood has spent more than a decade in public service in Orland Park across multiple village departments. She was appointed Orland Township Committeeperson in 2021 and also serves on the Moraine Valley Community College Board of Trustees, and has served on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Open Lands Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals in Orland Park.
Kirkwood holds a bachelor's degree in education from Benedictine University and is certified as an English as a Second Language teacher. She said dedicated representation for the South Suburbs at the MWRD is vital to the region's continued growth.
Pritzker said the MWRD plays a crucial role in ensuring the greater Chicagoland area has access to clean and safe water, protecting millions of Illinoisans, and that Kirkwood's lifelong record of community service fits the role.
