Michigan Governor-Elect Benson Names Transition Team: Four Leadership Council Chairs and Three Transition Co-Chairs Announced
Michigan Governor-Elect Jocelyn Benson announced the leadership of her transition team on November 4, as she prepares to take office in January. Benson, Michigan's secretary of state since 2019, defeated U.S. Representative John James in the November 3 election and will succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The transition is centered in Lansing, the state capital in Ingham County.
A new Leadership Council will be chaired by four people: former U.S. Representative Dan Kildee, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Huntington Bank chair Gary Torgow, and Strategic Staffing Solutions CEO Cindy Pasky. The council brings together figures from education, health care, public service, philanthropy, labor, business and law to advise on the incoming administration's agenda, which focuses on lowering the cost of fuel, food and other necessities, raising wages, and making government more responsive.
Three co-chairs will lead the transition team itself: former state Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, now CEO of the Greater Flint Health Coalition; Nicole Sherard-Freeman, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan; and Jeff Donofrio, CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan. Other council members include Michigan State University College of Human Medicine assistant dean Rosalynn Bliss, UAW International Executive Board vice president Laura Dickerson, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, and U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin.
Benson also announced she will voluntarily subject the Michigan Governor's Office to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests; the office has been exempt from FOIA since 1976 under state law. She said the team will make sure the new administration is ready to deliver from day one.
