Tennessee Governor-Elect Blackburn Names McWhorter to Chair Transition Committee

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

Tennessee Governor-Elect Marsha Blackburn announced on November 4 that Deputy Governor Stuart C. McWhorter will chair her transition committee. Blackburn met outgoing Governor Bill Lee in Nashville, the state capital in Davidson County, that day to begin coordinating the transfer of leadership. Blackburn won the November 3 election and will become Tennessee's first female governor when she takes office in January.

McWhorter serves as Deputy Governor and Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development in the Lee administration and will continue in those roles while leading the transition effort. He previously served as Commissioner of the Department of Finance and Administration, and before public service he was co-founder and chairman of Clayton Associates, with more than 25 years of experience in entrepreneurship and early-stage investing.

Blackburn called McWhorter an outstanding leader and said Tennessee would waste no time getting to work. McWhorter said he was honored to chair the committee and looked forward to working closely with the governor-elect at a pivotal moment for the state.

Lee said his team would support the Blackburn team in any way it can. The transition's initial focus will be assembling key staff, preparing the state budget and developing a legislative agenda for the upcoming General Assembly session.
