Paris Masters Upset Night: Hijikata Stuns Djokovic in Three Sets, Musetti Beats New World No. 1 Zverev

The Paris Masters delivered a night of upsets on Wednesday at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre: top seed and new world No. 1 Alexander Zverev lost 7-6(5), 6-2 to Lorenzo Musetti; qualifier Rinky Hijikata rallied to beat Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; and eighth seed Alex de Minaur fell 7-6(2), 6-3 to Tomás Martín Etcheverry. The defeats ended both Djokovic's and de Minaur's hopes of reaching the ATP Finals in Turin.
Zverev led the first-set tiebreak 5-2 in his first match as world No. 1 before Musetti reeled off five straight points. World No. 83 Hijikata struck 37 winners, 29 off the forehand, in a two-hour, 15-minute comeback.
Etcheverry's win was his first over a Top 10 opponent in 21 attempts. Elsewhere, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz beat Alex Michelsen 7-6(4), 6-3 and next faces Matteo Berrettini, who downed Ugo Humbert 7-6(3), 7-5. Sixth seed Arthur Fils beat Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6(4) without facing a break point and sealed his Turin berth, becoming the first Frenchman to qualify for the ATP Finals in a decade.
No. 11 seed Taylor Fritz survived Alex Molcan in a third-set tiebreak, Ignacio Buse beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4, and Quentin Halys saved four match points to upset seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in a final-set tiebreak. Next up: Fils vs. Fritz and Hijikata vs. Etcheverry.
