[Video] California DFPI Posts Full Anti-Scam Webinar: Breaking Down Fake Investments, Cloned Accounts and Bogus Shopping Ads on Social Media

On November 5, California's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) posted the full recording of its webinar 'Protect Yourself from Social Media Scams' on its official YouTube channel. The session runs 58 minutes, 2 seconds and is presented by Kue Lee, the department's Director of Targeted Outreach. DFPI is California's state regulator for financial consumer protection.
According to DFPI's description of the webinar, scammers increasingly use social media platforms to exploit people's trust, through tactics that include fake investment schemes, cloned accounts impersonating people or organizations, and fraudulent shopping ads.
The session lays out practical defenses: how to spot the common signs of these scams, how to secure your own social media profiles, and how to use social media safely. DFPI says the webinar is meant to give the public the tools to stop scammers cold.
It is DFPI's latest public anti-scam outreach. On October 28, the department released a 'Scam Spotlight' short video warning residents about the 'grandparent scam,' in which fraudsters impersonate a grandchild in urgent need of money.
