Follow-Up: New Wave of Bomb Threats Hits European Flights as EU Activates Aviation Security Information-Sharing Mechanism

Brussels — European flights were hit by a new wave of bomb threats on November 5. EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas condemned the series of security incidents targeting flights across the continent this week and confirmed that the EU-level aviation security information-sharing mechanism has been activated. He said it was too early to conclude whether the incidents are linked, and that national investigations remain ongoing.
According to Euronews and other outlets, hoax bomb threats against European aviation this week have exceeded 20, mainly targeting budget airlines and routes linked to Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Italy. The fresh wave on the morning of November 5 affected more than ten flights across Italy, France, Bulgaria, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic and elsewhere. Czech police said four incoming aircraft at Prague Airport received threats; bomb disposal teams searched them and found no explosives, and the investigation has been handed to the Czech National Counter-Terrorism, Extremism and Cybercrime Agency.
European Commission transport spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said earlier that the Commission is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with the affected member states, and that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency is also involved in assessing the impact of the threats on flight safety. Any threats against civilians are unacceptable, she said, and ensuring citizens' safety remains a priority. Tzitzikostas has asked national authorities responsible for threat assessment, investigations and aviation security measures to cooperate closely with airport operators, airlines and law enforcement.
This is the second such wave in a week: on November 3, at least seven passenger flights bound for Poland, Bulgaria, Italy and Spain received bomb threats on the same day, all landed safely and no explosive devices were found. All of the threats so far have proved false, no group has claimed responsibility, and officials have not attributed blame to any party.
