Google to Invest $17 Billion in Its First Wyoming Data Center, in Cheyenne

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

Google announced on Nov. 5 that it will invest $17 billion to build its first data center in Wyoming, in Cheyenne, as it presses ahead with large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure spending. Google will develop the project together with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power and Related Digital.

Part of the site's power will come from a planned 702-megawatt fuel-cell project equipped with carbon capture and storage, with the fuel cells supplied by Bloom Energy. The site is at the Switchgrass Industrial Park about eight miles south of Cheyenne — previously known as 'Project Tembo' — with planned power resources totaling 2.7 gigawatts, expected to start delivering power by late 2027 and reach peak load in 2030.

The announcement comes as political resistance to data center expansion rises across the country: of 41 data-center-related local ballot measures voted on this week, all but one opposed expansion. Google said it will proceed despite the controversy, and that its partners will bear the related power costs rather than passing them on to other utility customers.
