Sweden to Reintroduce Internal Border Controls for Six Months From November 12, Citing Serious Security Situation

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · World · GSM News

The Government of Sweden announced on November 5 that it will reintroduce controls at its internal borders for six months, from November 12, 2026 to May 11, 2027. The government said the decision rests on an assessment that there is a serious threat to public order and internal security.

The government said the assessment is based primarily on the serious security situation resulting from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has led to hybrid threats and hostile actors moving and operating within the Schengen area. The European Commission's published list of member-state notifications shows Sweden's controls will cover all internal borders — land, air and sea — as well as the land border with Denmark, and lists among the grounds the instrumentalisation of migration, recent events in the Spanish city of Ceuta, organised cross-border crime, and the policy of issuing visas to Russian citizens.

Under Schengen rules, member states may temporarily reintroduce internal border controls only in exceptional situations involving a serious threat. The Swedish government noted that other European countries, including France, Germany, Norway and Denmark, have taken similar steps. During the control period, travellers entering Sweden from other Schengen countries may face checks at the border. (Source: Government of Sweden)
